The Competition

This year's Game

After six weeks of working on the robot, our team will pack up and get ready for the competition. This year's game is entitled "Breakaway," a fast-paced walk down memory lane as aspects of previous competitions come back with a new twist and vengeance.

This year's playing field is split into thirds, with each third separated by foot-high bumps that robots can maneuver over. There's also a ten foot tower looming in the middle of each set of bumps that robots can grapple unto or go under if they choose. Goals are set up at the ends of the field next to where the drivers stand, and a vision target is located above each goal to help robots score goals.

There are three ways of scoring this year:

  • The first way is for robots to shoot balls into their designated goal.
  • The second way is to suspend your robot from the ten foot tower at the end of the round.
  • The third way is for a robot to suspend itself from another robot already suspended on the tower.

After a ball is scored, a human player will give the ball to another human player with a "trident" to return the ball to the field by means of a railing system. The ball is returned to the middle section of field where it comes back into play. In addition, a robot can only be in possession of one ball at a time.

Each round is 2 minutes and 15 seconds long with a 15-second autonomous period that starts at the beginning of the match. Scoring is very simple this year: 1 point for every ball scored, 2 points for every elevated robot on the tower, and 3 points for every robot suspended on another robot that's already suspended from the tower.
